Medavakkam is one of the fastest-growing pockets in South Chennai, and you can see it on the roads. New apartment blocks off Medavakkam Main Road. New clinics near the junction. Salons, gyms, play schools, cloud kitchens, and dental practices opening every few months, most of them within a kilometre of each other.
Which creates a specific problem that older neighbourhoods don’t have: nobody knows you exist yet. You have no regulars, no word of mouth, no reviews, and a competitor two streets away who opened six months before you did.
I’m Sai Hari, a performance marketer based in Chennai. This guide is about that exact situation — getting your first hundred paying customers when you’re starting from zero. If you’ve been searching for the best performance marketer in Medavakkam, it’s worth understanding this process first, because it will tell you whether you need to hire anyone at all.
Why New Businesses Advertise Wrong
The instinct when you open is to announce yourself. Grand opening post, a few boosted photos of the interior, a discount banner. Reach goes up. Nothing else does.
The problem is that “we exist” is not a reason to buy. Everyone in Medavakkam already has a salon, a clinic, a gym. They are not searching for a new one — they are getting on with their lives. Announcing your existence to people who already have a solution is the single most common way new businesses burn their first ₹20,000.
What works instead is narrower and less glamorous: pick one service, one specific customer, one strong reason to try you this week, and put it in front of people who live close enough to walk in.

The First 100 Framework
Here’s the structure I use for a new local business. It’s built around a simple truth: your first hundred customers are not a marketing problem, they’re a proof problem. You need enough real customers to generate reviews, referrals, and repeat visits — after which advertising gets dramatically cheaper.
Stage 1 — The first 20 (weeks 1–3). Goal: transactions, not profit. Run one campaign with a genuinely compelling first-visit offer to a 2–3 km radius. You are buying proof, not margin. Expect to roughly break even. That’s fine.
Stage 2 — The next 30 (weeks 4–8). Goal: reviews and retargeting. Every one of those first 20 customers should be asked for a Google review. Meanwhile, run remarketing to people who visited your page but didn’t come in. Cost per customer starts dropping here because you now have social proof to point at.
Stage 3 — The final 50 (weeks 9–16). Goal: efficiency. By now you know your real cost per customer, which offer converts, and which audience responds. This is where you scale the winner and where the business becomes predictable.
Roughly four months. Anyone telling a brand-new Medavakkam business they’ll have a full appointment book in three weeks is describing a fantasy.
What ₹15,000 a Month Actually Buys You Here
Concrete numbers, because vague answers help nobody.
At ₹500 a day in Meta ad spend targeting a tight radius around Medavakkam, a typical local service business sees:
- Cost per click: roughly ₹3–₹8, depending on category and creative quality
- Cost per enquiry (WhatsApp or call): ₹80–₹250 for most local services
- Enquiries per month: somewhere between 60 and 180
- Conversion to paying customer: usually 20–40% for local services with a decent offer
That’s a realistic range, not a promise — a dental clinic and a cloud kitchen behave very differently. But it tells you the shape of things: ₹15,000 in ad spend should produce enquiries in the dozens, not the hundreds, and your job is converting them well.
Categories with higher competition in Chennai — real estate, education, healthcare — sit at the expensive end of those ranges. For a fuller breakdown of what services cost, including management fees and GST, see my detailed guide to digital marketing cost in Chennai.
The Three Things to Fix Before Spending Anything
Most new businesses in Medavakkam start advertising before their basics are in place, and then blame the ads.
1. Google Business Profile. Free, and it appears in the map results above every paid ad for “near me” searches. Photos, hours, services, and category filled properly. If you do nothing else in this list, do this one — the official Google Business Profile help centre takes about fifteen minutes to work through.
2. A working way to be contacted. A WhatsApp number that someone actually monitors beats a contact form nobody checks. In residential Chennai, customers message — they rarely fill forms.
3. One clear offer. Not a menu of everything you do. One thing, with a reason to act now. “First consultation ₹199 this month” outperforms “quality dental care since 2026” every single time.
Fix these three and your ad budget works roughly twice as hard, because you stop paying to send people into a dead end.
Meta Ads or Google Ads for a New Medavakkam Business?
The honest answer depends on whether people are already looking for what you sell.
Google Ads captures existing demand. Someone searches “dentist near Medavakkam” — they want a dentist right now. High intent, higher cost per click, and worth it if your category is something people actively search for.
Meta Ads create demand. Nobody searches for a new gym at 9pm, but a well-made reel showing your equipment and a first-month offer can make them consider one. Lower cost per click, more volume, and better for categories people don’t actively search.
For most new local businesses in Medavakkam, my recommendation is Meta first, for one practical reason: you learn faster. More impressions and clicks per rupee means more data on which message works — and that learning transfers to Google Ads later. Add Google once you know your offer converts.
The exception: emergency or urgent services — clinics, plumbing, repairs. Those should be on Google from day one, because the customer is searching in the moment.
The Radius Question
Every new business owner wants to target all of Chennai. Almost every one of them should not.
Start at 2–3 kilometres. Medavakkam to Madipakkam, Perumbakkam, and Sholinganallur edges is already a substantial market — tens of thousands of households. A tight radius does three things:
- Lowers your cost per result, because you’re bidding in a smaller auction
- Improves conversion, because people can actually reach you
- Produces cleaner data, because your audience isn’t diluted
Expand only after the tight radius is profitable. This is the same principle I apply for businesses in Velachery and Adambakkam — start small, prove it works, then widen.
Creative: What Actually Stops the Scroll
You do not need a professional shoot to start. You need three things:
Real footage over stock. A phone video of your actual space, your actual staff, your actual food or equipment outperforms polished stock imagery for local businesses. People are deciding whether to walk into your place, not an idea of a place.
The offer visible in the first second. Not at the end of a 30-second video. In the thumbnail, in the first frame, in the first line of the caption.
Four variations, not one. Run four versions — different opening shot, different offer wording, different first line. After a week, kill the three that lose and put the budget behind the winner. This single habit is the difference between a campaign that improves and one that stays flat.
How to Judge Whether Your Marketing Is Working
New business owners tend to check the wrong numbers. Here is the hierarchy that matters:
| Metric | What it tells you | How much to care |
|---|---|---|
| Reach / impressions | How many saw it | Almost none |
| Clicks / CTR | Whether the creative works | Some |
| Cost per enquiry | Whether the funnel works | A lot |
| Cost per paying customer | Whether the business works | Everything |
| Repeat rate | Whether you’ll survive | Everything |
If your marketer reports the top two rows and not the bottom three, you are being shown activity instead of outcomes. That’s the clearest signal to change something.
Do You Actually Need to Hire Someone?
An honest answer, given that I’d be the person you’d hire.
You probably don’t need a marketer if: your total monthly budget is under ₹15,000, your category is simple, and you have the time to learn Meta Ads Manager yourself. At that budget, most of your money should be buying impressions, not paying fees.
You probably do need one if: you’re spending ₹20,000+ monthly, your category is competitive, you’ve run ads for two months without knowing your cost per customer, or your time is genuinely worth more spent running the business.
The best performance marketer in Medavakkam for your situation might be nobody, for now. Anyone who won’t tell you that isn’t worth hiring.
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon can a new Medavakkam business expect enquiries? Usually within the first week of a properly set up campaign, though the first two weeks are mostly data collection. Meaningful cost efficiency typically arrives in weeks 3–4.
What kinds of businesses does this work best for? Clinics and dental practices, gyms and fitness studios, salons and spas, play schools and tuition centres, cloud kitchens and restaurants, and home services. Anything where the customer lives within a few kilometres.
Is ₹300 a day enough to start? It’s the realistic floor. Below roughly ₹200–₹300 a day, Meta’s algorithm struggles to gather enough data to optimise, and results become inconsistent.
Should I run ads before my Google Business Profile is set up? No. The profile is free and often outperforms paid ads for local searches. Set it up first, then advertise.
Do you only work with businesses in Medavakkam? No. I work as a performance marketer in Chennai with brands across the city and remotely. Locally, I focus on Medavakkam, Velachery, Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Nanganallur, and Perumbakkam — you can see my full approach and services on my homepage.
